How to Improve Your Mood in Winter

As winter is approaching, the days grow shorter, and time indoors grows longer for many of us. This can lead to depression or at least bad moods for some people. Others might feel anxiety or have trouble concentrating.

In many cases, the common cause of low mood symptoms is a lower level of serotonin. This is the neurotransmitter that is responsible for our mood. It is affected by proper levels of tryptophan, B vitamins and various enzymes. The level of this substance also is affected by fatty acids and blood sugars.

The best way to keep your serotonin levels high is to follow these steps:

Eat Whole Grains

All whole foods have various levels of amino acids. For your body to make serotonin, you need to have a higher amount of tryptophan than other acids in the blood. By eating a moderate amount of whole grains, you will get this appropriate percentage in your blood. The grain that has the highest amount of tryptophan is buckwheat, but most whole grains will work too. Brown rice is a good choice as well.

Eat Greens

Leafy green vegetables are good for the brain. Greens are very high in most vitamins and minerals and also folate, which is an essential B vitamin that reduces depression. Spinach and kale are great choices.

Eat Fruit

Fruits have amino acids too, and bananas are very high in tryptophan. The natural sugars in bananas are good for making serotonin too. Note that dates and papaya are high in tryptophan too.

Do Not Eat Junk, Or At Least Limit It

Stimulants such as coffee and chocolate will briefly create serotonin, but using them regularly will disrupt your insulin levels, which creates other problems.

Ice cream also is not good for you. It contains too much sugar. Eat all junk foods in moderation.

Get As Much Sun as You Can

People who feel down usually have higher levels of melatonin in day time than they should Melatonin makes you feel the opposite of serotonin. It slows down the body and makes you ready to sleep.

When your body sees there is no sun, your pineal gland tells the body to make serotonin into melatonin. The way to fight this is to get more sun. Talk a walk, pull back the curtains or even use a sun lamp.

Get Exercise

Exercise is so wonderful for so many reasons, and it really helps with your mood. Research links vigorous exercise with higher serotonin levels. Exercise also causes higher levels of dopamine, which makes us more relaxed.

Sleep
